Lafayette High School's volleyball dynasty will look different this fall. Shaye Witherspoon, the 6-foot-3 outside hitter who led the Lancers to a fourth consecutive Missouri Class 5 state championship and earned every major player-of-the-year award in the state, is likely to miss her entire senior season after knee surgery revealed damage worse than expected.
A record-breaking season, then a setback
Witherspoon underwent knee surgery in May, initially expected to sideline her for about six weeks. But surgeons found the meniscus damage worse than anticipated, stretching her recovery to five to six months, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
That timeline likely pushes her return past the end of the high school volleyball season.
Lafayette head coach Zach Young told the Post-Dispatch on Aug. 5 that the situation remains uncertain. "I don't know this year if we'll see if Shaye's on the court or not," Young said. "We are going to enjoy just having them around for this last year."
Young added that Witherspoon is ahead of her recovery schedule but will remain part of the team in a leadership role regardless of whether she plays. She will have a jersey and be with the program, he said, and he expects her to contribute as a leader even if she cannot take the court.
The loss is staggering on paper. In the 2025-26 season, Witherspoon posted 636 kills, 274 digs, 98 blocks and 94 aces while hitting .395, leading Lafayette to a 40-1 record. Her kills and aces totals are both single-season school records. In the Class 5 championship match against Lee's Summit North, she recorded 32 kills and 12 digs, tying the championship match kill record she shares with her older sister Maya.
Those numbers earned Witherspoon the 2025-26 Gatorade Missouri Volleyball Player of the Year award, the MaxPreps Missouri Player of the Year and a spot on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) First Team All-America, according to West Newsmagazine. She is the fourth Lafayette player to earn the Gatorade honor and the second Witherspoon sister in consecutive years. Maya won in 2024-25.
Lee's Summit North coach Aubri Janes, whose team faced Witherspoon in the state championship, said in February when the Gatorade award was announced that Witherspoon "completely changes the dynamic of a match" and "plays with an intensity and confidence that elevates everyone around her."
Witherspoon, the daughter of former NFL player Will Witherspoon and Rebecca Witherspoon, who played volleyball at the University of Georgia, is ranked the No. 7 overall prospect in the Class of 2027 by PrepDig. She is committed to the University of Nebraska, where she is expected to make a full recovery before beginning her college career.
What's next for Lafayette volleyball
The Lancers open their season as four-time defending state champions but without their most dominant player on the court. Young's program has depth built over years of success, but replacing a player who averaged 5.9 kills per set will test the roster.
Witherspoon's recovery timeline suggests she could be cleared by October or November, after the high school season ends. The precedent at Nebraska is encouraging: current redshirt freshman Ryan Hunter suffered a similar knee injury before her senior year of high school, missed the season and was cleared to resume volleyball in December before enrolling at Nebraska.
