Parkway West girls tennis shut out Festus 5-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 20, advancing to the Class 2 state team tournament semifinals.
The Longhorns, who entered the state bracket as the Class 2 District 2 champions, will face St. Dominic (15-4) on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 9 a.m., according to the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) bracket. A win would send Parkway West to the state championship match that afternoon.
Senior Mireya David, a four-star recruit ranked second among Missouri girls in her graduating class, has led the lineup all four years of her varsity career. David told the Pathfinder, the school's student newspaper, on Oct. 12 that she was undefeated in both singles and doubles this season. She also won the Class 2 District 2 individual singles title at the Oct. 8-9 tournament.
"I feel like winning team districts and even state is a good possibility for us this year, and I really hope [we achieve that] because to do something so historical would be really special," David told the Pathfinder before the district team tournament began.
The Longhorns made good on the first half of that goal. Coached by Katelyn Arenos, Parkway West swept through districts as the No. 1 seed, beating Washington 5-1 on Oct. 13 and Clayton 5-1 in the final on Oct. 14. The state-round shutout of Festus pushed the team's record to 11-4.
St. Dominic advanced on the other side of the bracket with a 5-0 win of its own on Oct. 20. Two more wins would give the Longhorns the program's first state team championship.
