Three juveniles are in detention after prosecutors accused them of luring two men through Grindr and attacking them in separate, hate-motivated assaults in Ellisville on Oct. 21.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office announced the charges on Nov. 4. Each juvenile faces wo counts of first-degree assault, one count of attempted second-degree robbery, one count of first-degree property damage motivated by discrimination, and 0ne count of second-degree property damage motivated by discrimination, according to FOX 2. All three are being held at the St. Louis County Juvenile Detention Center. The charges were filed in St. Louis County Family Court.
Under Missouri law, the identities of juvenile suspects are not typically public record.
Both attacks happened during the early morning hours of Oct. 21. Prosecutors said the juveniles posed as an adult man named "Adam" on the dating app Grindr and arranged to meet victims in person, KSDK reported.
The first victim went to Bluebird Park on Kiefer Creek Road around 2:20 a.m. to meet "Adam." According to court documents cited by KSDK, one of the attackers told the victim, "I actually hate gay people." Others then emerged from nearby bushes. The group punched and kicked the victim in the head and torso while using slurs and demanding his belongings, according to charging documents.
The victim escaped to his car and drove to the Ellisville Police Department. Police said the attackers later returned to the park and destroyed the victim's phone. Surveillance video and audio from the park captured the attack, which left the victim hospitalized with serious injuries.
About 40 minutes later, a second victim was attacked in the 15900 block of Manchester Road, First Alert 4 reported. That victim also told police he had connected with a man named "Adam" on Grindr and was attacked by a group when he arrived.
Police used license plate reader cameras to identify and locate the vehicle the suspects were driving.
Separately, prosecutors announced Nov. 4 that all charges against Abdulwareth Alahmad, 18, had been dismissed. The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said on Nov. 4 that further review of the evidence led detectives to clear Alahmad of criminal involvement, according to First Alert 4.
Attorney Jay Kanzler, who represents Alahmad, said in a statement that his client "was mistakenly believed to have been a participant in the attack but has been fully exonerated."
St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Price Smith said in a press release that her office takes the attacks seriously. She encouraged anyone who believes they may have been victimized by the same assailants to contact their local police department.
The Ellisville Police Department's investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information can call the department at 636-227-7777 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477).
