Marquette beat Lafayette 28-27 in overtime Friday night, Oct. 30, advancing in the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 6 District 2 playoffs on a blocked extra point.
The fourth-seeded Mustangs hosted the fifth-seeded Lancers at Marquette's Chesterfield campus for the district quarterfinal. The game went to overtime tied and ended when Marquette blocked Lafayette's extra-point attempt, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The Post-Dispatch credited seniors Jonic Donatelli and Luke Boyer as central to the finish.
It was the second meeting between these Rockwood R-VI rivals in five weeks. Marquette won the regular-season matchup 27-21 on Sept. 25, according to MSHSAA records. MSHSAA lists the series record as 10-10.
A wild night on both sides

Marquette quarterback Kolden Richards threw throughout the night, while running back Jermon Abbott took hits from Lafayette defenders. Donatelli, who helped seal the win, also recorded an interception during the game.
