Parkway West's girls tennis team beat Thomas Jefferson Independent Day 5-2 on Thursday, Oct. 29, to win the Class 2 state championship, the first team tennis title in program history.
The Longhorns played two matches in one day at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. They opened with a 5-1 semifinal win over St. Dominic that morning, then topped Thomas Jefferson Independent Day in the afternoon final.
It capped a dominant postseason run. Parkway West, the No. 1 seed out of District 2, swept Festus 5-0 in the state quarterfinals on Oct. 20 before rolling through the final two rounds, according to Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) records.
The championship adds to what has already been a historic fall for Parkway West tennis. Senior Mireya David won the Class 2 individual singles state title on Oct. 23, beating teammate Shree Nidhi Sikkal Kumar, a junior, 6-2, 6-3 at the same Springfield complex, as the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. David became the first Parkway West player to win a singles state championship.
The Longhorns finished the season 13-4. MSHSAA's Final Site History for the program lists one championship appearance: 2026. Thomas Jefferson Independent Day, which entered the final undefeated at 12-0, had reached the final site three times, in 2023, 2024 and 2026, but had never won the title.
Coach Katelyn Arenos led the Longhorns through both the singles and team tournaments this fall.
Parkway West went undefeated at home this season at 6-0 and posted a 5-0 mark in neutral and tournament settings, per MSHSAA records.
