Monarch-Chesterfield Levee Trail Adds 1.48 Miles, Now Stretches Into Wildwood

A 1.48-mile expansion of the Monarch-Chesterfield Levee Trail opened Friday, May 29, connecting two previously separated sections and creating a continuous 10.43-mile paved route that now extends 1.52 miles into Wildwood.

The trail runs along the Chesterfield Valley levee from near Edison Avenue and Long Road, loops through the valley to North Eatherton Road, and crosses into Wildwood. Riders, runners, and walkers can now cover the full route without interruption. The trail is wheelchair accessible.

The expansion is a joint effort between the City of Chesterfield and Great Rivers Greenway. Wayne Dunker, Chesterfield's Director of Parks, Recreation & Arts, credited the partnership with Great Rivers Greenway for making the project possible.

"We are incredibly grateful for the continued partnership between Great Rivers Greenway and the City of Chesterfield, which allows us to invest in high-quality community spaces like the Monarch-Chesterfield Levee Trail," Dunker said.

The city reported nearly 74,000 visits to the trail in 2025, before the new section opened.

Ribbon-Cutting June 9

The city is hosting a public ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, June 9, at 9 a.m. at the new trail section behind Topgolf Chesterfield on Outer 40 Road. The event is free and open to the public.

The trail is part of a larger 17-mile master plan loop that will eventually encircle Chesterfield Valley. It also connects via the Daniel Boone Bridge pedestrian path over the Missouri River to the Katy Trail in St. Charles County.

Trail users on the Wildwood end can park at a small lot off Eatherton Road. Amenities along the route include benches, drinking water, restrooms, and a playground at the Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex.

A mural greets users just past the Baxter Road crossing on the eastern segment. The levee-top path is flat and mostly sun-exposed, so bring water and sunscreen.

Cyclists looking for more trail time can also note a Missouri Greenway Bike Ride with St. Louis Oasis on Friday, June 12, from 9 a.m. to noon on the Missouri Greenway.
