Rendering of police chase

An Ellisville man fired seven rounds at a sheriff's deputy and a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper during a high-speed chase on Interstate 70 early May 9, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said. No officers were hit.

Clayton Wulf, 31, faces charges of first-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated fleeing, and careless and imprudent driving. First-degree assault is a Class A felony in Missouri, carrying 30 years to life. The armed criminal action charge adds a mandatory minimum of three years with no parole eligibility.

The incident began when multiple 911 callers reported a black pickup truck speeding, swerving across lanes, and running drivers off the road on westbound I-70 near milepost 171.8 in Montgomery County. Deputies located the truck and attempted a traffic stop. Wulf fled.

Near milepost 168, he leaned out the driver's side window and fired seven shots at the pursuing deputy and trooper, the sheriff's office said.

The chase continued into Callaway County, where Wulf brake-checked officers, drove on the shoulder, forced other motorists off the road, and exceeded 100 mph. He also swerved toward a trooper deploying spike strips, nearly striking the officer.

Wulf was eventually arrested in Boone County, roughly 60 miles west of where the pursuit began.

No court date or arraignment information has been released.
